On Thursday evening, police arrested a 23-year-old woman whose deceased 19-month-old toddler was discovered Nov. 14 inside a bedroom closet at her 1852 Spring Drive apartment. Garner police charged Sherita McNeil with 1st degree murder and one count of concealing a death of a person.

The charges come after a more than two-month investigation by the Garner Police Department.

On Nov. 3, local police received a report from Child Protective Services regarding a welfare check on young Devarion Gross. The caller said the boy had not been seen since Labor Day. A detective attempted to meet with McNeil on Nov. 13, but was told by family that she had been acting strangely and did not want certain people to see the child, according to warrants from the case.

The family entered the apartment the next day, discovered the child, and called authorities. The body was found inside a white trash bag with sheets on top. Bleach had been poured on them to mask the smell, according to investigators.

Garner Police are holding a press conference at their West District office tomorrow at 9 a.m.
