GPD: Crime Stats Don’t Support Dangers at Wal-Mart email

Garner Police are trying to defuse a rumor that the new Wal-Mart has an ongoing crime problem. Police received several copies of an email alleging that customers were being robbed and followed. The email also said men were removing woman’s purses with razor blades by cutting them off their shoulders. The store at 4500 Fayetteville Road opened last July.

Garner Police released a statement late last week stating they are “very concerned about the allegations” and have researched the reports.  Since the store opened, there have been no robberies or purse snatchings reported.  The majority of calls are for shoplifting, with a few reports of suspicious persons  in the area.

“Our research indicates that any crime problem associated with Walmart is clearly low and compares favorably to crime rates of similar retail locations in Garner,” Chief Tom Moss said in the statement.
