Wear your seat belt or pay the price: That’s the message the Wake County Traffic Safety Task Force is once again sending to motorists.
The task force will hold a night-time check point in Garner on Friday, May 22. This is part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign aimed at motorists who are not wearing their seat belts.
According to the GPD news release, 484 unbuckled motorists died in North Carolina in 2008. In an effort to change this statistic, the task force is conducting an aggressive state-wide “Click It or Ticket” campaign from May 18 through May 31.
The check points are held periodically at various locations in Wake County. Garner most recently saw one last August, when police issued 61 citations and arrested five people for driving while impaired.
The seat belt usage rate for Garner drivers is currently more than 90 percent, said Lt. Bob Stevens, supervisor of the Garner Police Traffic Safety Unit.
“I have to believe that the checkpoint … is one of the reasons why,” he said.
The Wake County Traffic Safety Task Force comprises representatives from the majority of the law enforcement agencies in Wake County. Its purpose is to give agencies the opportunity to participate in campaigns throughout the year that focus on improving traffic safety in the county.
