Garner teen wins annual essay contest

Arlie Honeycutt of Garner won second place in the junior division of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Wake County’s 42nd annual writing contest.

The award, which included a book (“The Oxford English Companion to Literature”), a certificate and $100 monetary prize, was presented at Phi Beta Kappa’s spring banquet Tuesday, April 28 at the Carolina Country Club.

Honeycutt was recognized for her paper “Fractured Marriages in ‘The Scarlet Letter’ and ‘Hedda Gabler,’” which was a regular class assignment in Priscilla Chappell’s 11th grade AP English/world history class at Enloe High School.

First place in the junior division went to Michelle Wang of Cary Academy for her work “When Sin Becomes God … “; honorable mention was awarded to Greg Izatt of Raleigh Charter High School. The contest was open to all Wake County high school juniors and seniors. Senior winners were Indu Ramesh of Enloe High (first place), Kendall Pletcher of Saint Mary’s School (second place) and Jack Greenburg of Ravenscroft School (honorable mention).

Honeycutt lives in Garner with her parents, Scott and Beth Honeycutt, and brother Jackson. The Phi Beta Kappa Association is made up of alumni members of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest undergraduate honor society. Founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.
