Butterball LLC, whose headquarters are in Garner, has been named 2008 Plant of the Year in the Meat, Poultry and Seafood division by Refrigerated & Frozen Foods magazine.

The judging criteria spanned several categories, including worker and food safety, community involvement, environmental initiatives and innovation.

Butterball is the largest producer of turkey products in the United States. Its Mt. Olive facility – which recently achieved Rising Star status from North Carolina’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs – employs more than 2,000 hourly associates with an additional 200 management and support staff. Each week, the location produces 2.5 million pounds of fully cooked products.

“Achieving this status has been a vision of the leadership group at Butterball and this facility for several years,” said Complex Manager Phil Paulk. “It took every associate in the plant – both hourly and salary – working together, focused on and committed to safety, to achieve this recognition.”
