“The season started with 26 young ladies eager to make their own mark on the school, and they have done just that,” Coach C.J. Nesbit said.

The season got off to a good start with a huge win over Dillard Middle School and Ligon Middle School Tuesday, March 31, with the Trojans taking first place in several events. Lauren Madgefrau ran a first-place mile; Kionte Smith took first place at long jump; Tykelia Mason won the 100-yard dash and the 200-yard dash; Kyana Stokes won the 400-yard dash; and Candice Jones placed first at high jump. There was also a sweep at shot put led by Tailah Joyner, Shamani Hall, Lea Johnson and Armoni Guy.

“After the meet, the girls began to set individual goals in hopes of breaking and setting new school records. My goal was for the girls to have fun and build confidence as well as be competitive at practices and meets,” Nesbit said.

The team went on to overpower Daniels Middle School and Carnage Middle School at shot put at a meet Tuesday, April 21. Madgefrau placed second in the mile and third in the 800-yard dash; Mason took home first place in the 200-yard dash while Smith placed third. LaCherie Clark and Stokes captured first and second place in the 400-yard dash respectively, and Stokes also placed second in the 800-yard dash.

EGMMS took first place at the meet with a score of 45. North Garner Middle School came in second with 41.

“The score remained close, but I knew if we continued to get second and third place and a few first places, we would be fine,” Nesbit said.

“I am so proud of the hard work and effort put in by the entire team,” Nesbit said. “I think the girls learned if you want something badly enough, you have to be confident, determined and dedicated. The team maintained these qualities and dominated the conference.”
