The Garner Magnet High School senior killed in a motor vehicle accident Monday night was driving west toward Garner when his car crossed into the opposite lane.
Roy Alexander Bryant, 18, of Jones Sausage Road, was struck in the passenger side door by an eastbound vehicle, according to a spokesperson for the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The vehicles came to rest in the eastbound ditch.
The two-vehicle accident occurred on Old U.S. 70 in Clayton between Old Shotwell Road and Powell Road.
“It looks like his car was going to leave the pavement on a slight left-hand turn. He turned left real hard, hit the brakes at the same time and spun into her,” said trooper T.C. Emory.
The driver of the second vehicle was identified as Jennifer Bumgarner, 32, of Clayton. Her 1-year-old baby was in the back seat, Emory said. Clayton EMS took the mother and child to WakeMed in Raleigh. Both have since been released, according to the hospital.
No charges will be filed relating to the incident.
Garner High’s graduation is scheduled for June 10. Grief counselors for students and staff were at the school on Monday, according to local officials.
Authorities do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in the crash, Emory said. They have requested testing from the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The results should be returned in four to six weeks, he said.
“That is standard practice,” Emory said.
