After a loss to Cary the night before, Post 232 returned home Monday, June 22 to take on Apex for the second and final time in the regular season. The second meeting between the two teams played out more like normal compared to the 20-16 game they played just a few days before.

Garner gave the ball to Hunter Brown who found the going a little rough in the game’s first inning. Apex’s Theo Bacot led off the game by reaching on an error and later scored on a single by Ryne Frankoff. Frankoff later scored in the inning, and Garner was down 2-0.

But Post 232 got right back in the game in the bottom of the inning as Micheal Zeblo continued his hot hitting against Apex with a single to left. Zeblo scored two batters later on a two-run homerun by Kyle Hedgepeth, which tied the game at two after the first inning.

Post 232 takes control

With Apex leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, they found a way to take control of the game off Post 124 starter Derek Carlyle. Dillon Creech led off the inning with a double down the left-field line after a walk to Zeblo. Daniel Terry laid down a bunt, which Carlyle fielded. His throw got past the Post 124 first basemen, allowing Creech and Zeblo to score, giving Post 232 the one-run lead.

Leading 6-4 going to the bottom of the eighth, Garner added more offense with a three spot to take a 9-4 lead. The big hit of the inning came from Zeblo, who homered to left to drive in all three runs for Garner in the eighth, as Post 232 would go on to sweep the season series.

Postgame thoughts

Post 232 Coach Chris Cook had a lot to say about his team after the 9-4 win over Apex. “We played awfully well,” he said. “We pitched well and gave ourselves a chance to win late in the game and delivered the knockout punch with the three-run home run from Zeblo.”

Cook was impressed with Zeblo specifically.

“If he played Apex every night he might be a first round draft pick,” Cook said. “Right now he is on a tear, and he didn’t miss a lot of pitches.”

Winning pitcher: Hunter Brown

Losing pitcher: Derek Carlyle
