Several dozen officials, employees and media assembled at 11:25 a.m. this morning at Lake Benson Park for a moment of silence honoring those injured and killed in last week’s factory explosion.
Like last Tuesday, heavy rain caused a change in plans. Officials moved the ceremony under a large picnic shelter at the park.
Rep. Darren G. Jackson (Dem) of the North Carolina General Assembly joined local officials in commemorating the one week anniversary of the most devastating incident in town history. Mayor Ronnie Williams, Police Chief Tom Moss and Fire Department Chief Phil Mitchell all made remarks.
“There is a light that can be seen during any tragedy,” said Mitchell. “The light here was employees helping employees. It is tragic but if you look hard enough you can see that light.”
