Despite the prospect that many of them might never see each other again, the Wake Christian Academy Class of 2009 seniors were all good-natured, full of jokes and laughter during their graduation at Colonial Baptist Church Thursday, May 28.

In fact, the only noticeable tears were from WCA mascot Julieanne Amick, who was comforted by a junior marshal during an anecdotal speech by guest speaker Attorney David Gibbs from the Christian Law Association.
The 57 graduates offered up disappointed sighs when Assistant Principal Ardyss Woods mentioned her retirement at the end of the school year, but during the rest of the commencement ceremony, the church resounded with blow horns, raucous guffaws, yells of congratulations and applause.
The relaxed atmosphere among the close-knit group of seniors is typical of the senior classes, according to Annette Taylor, a WCA parent and photographer for The Garner Citizen, though the crowd was a little more subdued this time. In previous years, Taylor said seniors have handed Principal Wayne Helder gag gifts as they accepted their diplomas onstage.
However subdued this year, the graduates were still ready to celebrate by the time Administrator Mike Woods instructed them to flip their tassels: Seniors tossed their caps into the air and shot off pop-out streamers.
The Class of 2009 graduates will head off to colleges in the fall on $1.2 million worth of scholarships and grants.
