After 20 years as Garner’s police chief, Tom Moss will retire this fall.
An eastern North Carolina native, Moss has grown to love the town he has helped police.
“It’s been a great ride. …I came to Garner for a job, and I found a home,” Moss said.
Moss will officially retire on Oct. 31. He told town officials of his plans three-and-a-half months early partly to provide ample time in finding his successor, he said.
The town is hoping to have a new police chief in place by the time he departs, Moss said.
The town has hired consulting firm Developmental Associates to assist in the search. The consultant will meet publicly with town officials Thursday, July 16 (download agenda) at Town Hall to discuss qualifications and qualities desired in the new hire.
Moss has been with the town since 1989 and has worked in law enforcement for 33 years. Previously, he worked as an assistant chief with the Kinston Police Department and as an officer in Rocky Mount, his hometown.
Moss plans to stay in the area but does not have immediate plans.
“There might be a market for [an] old, washed-up police chief somewhere along the way…but at this point, I’m certainly looking forward to slowing down just a little bit,” Moss said.
