As in years past, Garner residents will come together tonight for National Night Out.
The national event — billed as “America’s Night Out Against Crime” — is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the U. S. Department of Justice and Target stores. More than 37 million people are expected to participate this year.
Garner has two locations participating this year. Plans for each site vary, but will likely include food, drinks, music, entertainment and games for the kids. Police officers will be on site at each location, distributing crime prevention information, child identification kits, and answering any questions from participants. McGruff the crime dog will also make special appearances. The event is held from 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The locations in Garner are:
“The night offers a great opportunity for citizens, community groups, police departments and local officials to get out, meet, greet and discuss crime prevention and safety issues,” said Officer Troy Young, the department’s crime prevention officer.
National Night Out was created by the NATW to take place annually on the first Tuesday night in August. Residents are asked to support National Night Out 2009 by turning on all outdoor lights at 6:00 p.m. tonight.
