New business

Twenty-six members and guests attended. Under the leadership of the new commander, Terry Chatfield, the Post now aims to hold 12 monthly meetings per year. Before, the Post had not been holding meetings in July and August.

Chatfield also introduced the practice of initiating new members by presenting a certificate and member pin to new member Danny Sawyer.

Initiatives

Initiatives discussed at the meeting were Boy Scouts, Sons of the Legion and the American Legion Riders.

Post 232 will support Scout Troop 392, which meets at First Presbyterian Church, by being a cosponsor. New member Herb Liebsch will be chair of the Post Scouting Committee.

The Sons of the Legion unit will be chartered very soon as the last of the required number of members turn in applications. SAL members must have a father or grandfather who is or was eligible for the American Legion. There are no age restrictions for SAL members.

The American Legion Riders participated in a ride to a Virginia Post, helped with the formation of a new ALR unit at Post 109 in Benson and donated 19 lbs. of pull-tabs to the Ronald McDonald House fundraiser.

Awards

Post 232 held an awards ceremony during its July meeting. The Post received a record-breaking six awards for membership during the year, including the 100 Percent Plus Award. Awards for volunteers during the baseball season were given to Athletic Officer Ross Whitfield, George Shaw, Lawrence Watkins and Coy Stephenson. The baseball team ended up with a 15-15 win-loss record and was third in their conference of nine teams.

Outgoing Commander Warren Murphy was also presented with a pin and a plaque honoring his service from 2000 through 2009 as post commander. The next meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 20.
