Staff reports
The Garner Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Fireman’s Day Saturday, Oct. 3 at Garner Fire Station No. 1 at the corner of Hwy 50 and Main Street.
The festivities kick off with barbecue plates (pork barbecue, boiled potatoes, coleslaw and hush puppies) for sale for $7 at 11 a.m. — a nice, hearty breakfast. Kids of all ages can play games, such as the Carolina Hurricanes Slap Shot, starting at noon, and fire trucks will be on display all day. If the rain holds off, there will also be a live fire exhibit, K9 and rescue equipment demonstrations.
A parade, complete with fire, police, EMS and rescue vehicles; floats; bands; marching units and much more, will begin at 2 p.m. The annual parade has on average 100 entries. The grand marshal this year is Kelcey Carlson, WRAL reporter and anchor. The parade will start at Hwy 50 and Garner Road, travel east on Garner Road, turn right on New Rand Road and turn right to continue onto Main Street. Everyone is invited to participate free of charge.
To wrap up the day’s events, a raffle will be held around 7 p.m. The grand prize is $10,000. Tickets are on sale now for $5 and may be obtained from any Garner firefighter or at any Garner fire station.
