Garner residents will soon have another place to jog, fly a kite, have a picnic or just play.

Town Councilman Ken Marshburn, left, and Sam Adams of Cherry Huffman Architects review a rendering of the nature center at its future site in White Deer Park in March.
The town of Garner will hold the grand opening of White Deer Park Sunday, Nov. 1 from noon to 5 p.m. Garner residents and guests can visit Garner’s newest park and enjoy the many activities planned for the grand opening ceremony.
A dedication ceremony and green ribbon cutting will be held adjacent to the nature center at 3 p.m. with Mayor Ronnie Williams, Council members and town staff.
White Deer Park and Lake Benson Park offer more than 160 acres of contiguous park property to explore. Residents can make use of the new park’s nature trails and visit the wildflower meadow and the arboretum, as well as the nature center. The ceremony will also offer nature exhibits, children’s nature activities, educational displays, refreshments and park tours that will highlight the many green features of the park and nature center.
The town has registered this project with the U.S. Green Building Council to achieve Silver LEED Green Building Rating certification. The park’s nature center will be the town’s first LEED-accredited building. A LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. The Nature Center will be one of 20 LEED-certified municipal buildings in North Carolina and one of four in Wake County.
As a part of its design, the nature center will showcase many environmentally friendly systems and features. It will also offer interpretative exhibits and offer live programs about the surrounding natural habitat and the need to protect the environment. The center’s deck area will provide additional teaching and learning space, as it overlooks the park and wetland areas below.
White Deer Park is located at 2400 Aversboro Road, adjacent to Garner’s Lake Benson Park.
