Merilyn Hayes Duncan, 65, of Garner passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17 at home with loved ones around her.
Born Oct. 27, 1944, in Bladen County to Eugene Lennon Hayes and Ada Margaret Regan Hayes Hammond, Merilyn was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather Elmo Hammond.
Merilyn received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Campbell University. Upon graduation, she taught in the elementary grades for the Wake County Public School System until her retirement in 1998. After several years in retirement, Merilyn began working as a library assistant with the Southeastern Regional Library of Garner and retired from this position in 2009.
As an active member of First Baptist Church of Garner, Merilyn taught Sunday school, served as a Girls Auxiliary leader and sang in the chancel choir for a number of years. With her gentle spirit and quiet grace, Merilyn constantly inspired those around her.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 19 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner. Burial followed at Montlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by husband Charles Duncan of the home; son Geoffrey Duncan (and wife Evelyn) of Garner; and daughter Gina Duncan of Atlanta, Ga. Also surviving are sisters Celia Hayes Ogburn of Garner and Judith Hayes Enzor (and husband Herman) of Nichols, S.C.; and nephews G. Tim Pait II of Raleigh and Jonathan L. Cutrell III of Richmond, Va.
