Garner Town Manager Hardin Watkins and Sgt. Chris Clayton ran 14 miles yesterday to help the Power UP Foundation promote physical and mental health.
Watkins and Clayton joined Coach Doug Merrill, a former baseball player who has dealt with the suicides of eight friends during his lifetime. He began the Power UP Foundation as a way to raise money for programs throughout the U.S. that promote better physical and mental health.
This was only one leg of Merrill’s journey: His run began on Oct. 4 in Boston and will conclude in early April 2010 in Key West, Fla.
He spoke to the Garner Parks & Recreation basketball leagues on Saturday, and will address the Garner Town Council this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. during their regularly scheduled Council meeting.
