Ask Town Hall: What’s up with Planet Fitness?

Q. Remember the Planet Fitness to be built near Lowe’s Foods on Timber Drive? Many residents are awaiting someplace to fill the Peak Fitness vanishing-act vacuum. Whom may we thank for the delay? To quote The Who, I hope “we don’t get fooled again”!

A. Garner’s new fitness center was delayed but is still on track to be completed.

The project was held up in review because of unexpected utility issues at the site. The Dewitt, N.Y.,-based Widewater Group, which owns the Shops at Timber Landing, the site of the future Planet Fitness, and the city of Raleigh, which will provide water and sewer to the facility, have since resolved these issues.

The plan is to build a new space at the end of the center and use that and some existing space — the spot where Prime Smokehouse was — to house the gym, which will be about 20,000-square-feet.

Widewater submitted the building permit application and the town is currently reviewing it, said Planning Director Brad Bass.

Owner C.J. Bouchard expects to break ground in the next month or so and hopes the gym will open by September.

“We’re trying to open as soon as possible,” Bouchard said. “We realize we could be doing a lot there now.”

Despite the delay, Bouchard believes the gym will thrive at the corner of Aversboro Road and Timber Drive.

“It’s a proven intersection,” he said.

The gym will start selling memberships May 1. The facility will stay open 24 hours a day and will have eight tanning beds to start.

  1. Bring it on! Can’t wait to have another PF close by (dropped my membership at Western/Jones Franklin when we moved away from NCSU).

CJ – I know it’s not really the Planet Fitness way, but group classes would be awesome ;-) I’d definitely pay extra! My boyfriend will love the free weights, etc., but I get bored and need a class, hah!
