The Cleveland Library is sponsoring the 2010 “Freedom to Read” Essay and Art Contest for students in schools and colleges in Wake and Johnston counties.
For the contest, students are to write a one- to two-page essay or draw a one-page, letter-size original picture or design about their favorite book. Entries will only be judged in the student’s age group: 8 to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 16 or 17 and older. The entry form and more guidance are available at 4042needs.org.
Entries must be mailed by April 5 to Ronald Still, Intellectual Freedom Committee, Cleveland Library, 1413 Kenbrook Drive, Garner, NC 27529. The winner in each age group will be invited to receive his prize and meet the judges Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The “Freedom to Read” concept is one promoted by the American Library Association as it continues to fight censorship and government intrusion in collection building and the privacy of the patrons and their reading habits. Although Cleveland is an independent library, it has a 70,000 book and movie collection, mostly donated by residents living within 30 miles of the library.
