The town of Garner will amp up March Madness for a good cause: Mayor Ronnie Williams and town employees will participate in The V Foundation’s Show Your Spirit campaign Thursday, March 18.

Garner will join forces with The V Foundation for Cancer Research and Team ESPN to celebrate the college basketball tournament season. Mayor Williams will sign a proclamation at noon at the Avery Street Recreation Center to declare March 18 Show Your Spirit Day.

Participants are encouraged to donate $5 to The V Foundation and wear basketball gear to show support for their favorite college team and also to raise awareness of the fight against cancer.

The campaign runs until Tuesday, April 6, the day of the final NCAA championship game.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research is one of the nation’s leading cancer research fundraising organizations.

“Show Your Spirit is a way for everyone to be involved in the fight against cancer while celebrating this great time of year,” V Foundation CEO Nick Valvano said. “Everyone enjoys supporting their favorite team. Working together, we can make a significant contribution to cancer research.”

The foundation was founded by ESPN and legendary N.C. State University basketball coach Jim Valvano in 1993. Since then, the foundation has raised more than $90 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide. It awards 100 percent of all donations and proceeds of events to cancer research and related programs.
