I had the opportunity to visit the new Garner flea market on Plaza Circle not too long ago. While there were few vendors, they all were hustling about and making their spaces look just perfect. I walked through the building, taking time to speak to each vendor. The excitement and laughter were generating a lot of energy through the entire area.
I was especially interested in one particular booth. A young couple was busy setting up their space with baked goods. I smelled their coffee and noticed the big smiles on their faces. They were having such a good time together. I stopped to watch and listen as they told the customers about each cookie, brownie, cupcake, bread and cake.
“It is all made from scratch,” they said. “We make everything in our kitchen. Here, try a sample!” Some bought, and others did not. I couldn’t wait another minute! I had to taste it! Every bite was delicious. I particularly liked the baked oatmeal-apple cookies. I was told that the couple used brown sugar. They said it is much better for your health than white sugar.
This couple was working hard. I visited with them for quite a while. They explained to me that this was a way for them to make some extra money for bills while trying to pursue a dream. Their dream is to one day open a bakery in Garner. What a wonderful idea! You just don’t see many bakeries anymore. Everything is in the grocery store these days.
I continued to listen. The young lady is a full-time student in the engineering school at N.C. State University. The young man has taken time off from school to try to earn extra money to make ends meet. He works full time at the Raleigh Times Restaurant, preparing meals. They are at the flea market every day it’s open. Sometimes they both work, and other times only one of them can be there. They don’t miss a day.
They love living in Garner. They live less than a mile from the market.
“It seems to be working well right now,” they said. They are intelligent, honest and hard-working.
They gave me a business card and encouraged me to visit them again. I will certainly go back. I left with lots of goodies too. They also invited me to join their Facebook page and read about their journey thus far. I promised them that I would, and I kept my promise. It was very emotional for me. I invite you to view their page at Aly and G’s HomeBaked Treats.
I also encourage you to visit them at the flea market. This is a wonderful story full of love, dreams, struggles, sacrifice and hard work — not to mention little sleep for them; they bake every evening after a long day.
I am looking forward to my next visit. I hope you will take the time to visit too!
