Garner-based volunteers of the ALS Association’s Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter will walk in the annual Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS Saturday, April 10.

Team Berline invites others in the community to join their team. Interested parties can call 919-266-2228 or visit catfishchapter.org to join.

The 3K walk will take place at the Credit Suisse campus in Morrisville. The fundraiser raises proceeds for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) research, specifically direct funding to patients and families affected by the disease.

ALS is a progressive and fatal motor neuron disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Many people with ALS can have difficulty speaking or swallowing. Patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed, but the vast majority of affected people maintain sharp, unaffected minds. It is estimated that there are about 700 people in North Carolina who have ALS.

“One of our main goals at the chapter is to get the community involved,” said Angela Murphy, special events coordinator for the walk. “We need to raise awareness and get people involved in actively searching for a cure. The walk is a great opportunity to learn about the disease while also doing something about it.”
