were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating Jr., chairman of the
failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation
by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, (FHLBB).
After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991
that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini and Donald Riegle had substantially and
improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings,
while John Glenn and John McCain had been only minimally involved. The Committee
recommended censure for Cranston and criticized the other four for questionable
conduct. That moment in history cost the American people millions of
dollars, not to mention the lack of trust in the regulators and politicians
that oversee it.
The election cycle is as important now as it has ever been. The position of
the president of the United States is the most powerful position in the world,
both in terms of military might and perception. It makes us the envy and target
of those that despise us for our views, polices and lifestyle, it also makes
us the destination for millions of people around the world that want a better
life.
Currently, McCain is waiting to see who survives the democratic campaign.
Will it be Obama or Clinton? In my humble opinion, as it relates to the overall
wellbeing of this nation, militarily, economically and socially, theres
not much difference. The election of any of the three would curtail our freedoms,
to some degree. Obama and Clinton would limit or deny our Second Amendment
rights and choke us on socialized medicine. McCain would limit our First Amendment
right of freedom of speech. I also feel that if I want to spend money on a
campaign for a cause or candidate, I should be able to and without limits.
Every candidate for office says whatever it takes to get into the Casa Blanco.
Some are more motivated by personal legacies than others, and some genuinely
want to make a difference but get corrupted by the process of the good ol
boy politics of Washington.
I dont know if McCain would be a better president than Clinton or Obama.
It seems these days its not so much that youre voting for somebody
as you are voting against someone else. One of them will be elected president,
whether any of us likes the choices or not. The most important thing we citizens
can do is to be active participants in the process.
